A Year in The Past and Hopes for the Future

January 6, 2021

As we enter a new year full of uncertainty,

With the hopes for it to be better than the last,

As we tremble in our boots thinking on the year in the past,

Why is everything so messed up?

Maybe the loss of a loved one,

Or maybe it's the pandemic, ravenging our cities with no remorse,

Leaving everyone gasping for air between coughs,

Not even able to sneeze in public without being looked at like a serial killer,

Or maybe it’s the dark thoughts circling in our minds,

The depression sets in,

Thinking of all the bad things in our lives like there is no good,

It may be all three,

A sinister trifecta destroying lives not even yet grown.

As we look to the future with hope in our eyes,

We must take the good with the bad,

And stay humbled and glad,

That no year can be as bad as the one we’ve all seen,

So here I have come to say,

Screw you 2020,

You’ve brought nothing but dismay.

So now as we prepare for the next year,

With hope in our eyes, and fear in our hearts,

Please let this be a year of a little normalcy,

Let us back in school without a mask,

Let us live our young lives, making our own mistakes to learn from,

And creating precious memories that can never be remade.
