Between the nerves that line our arms

The nerves that allow us to feel every embrace

There is hate

Between the soft folds that characterize the exterior of our brains

The folds that help us process wisdom

There is doubt

Between the blood that runs through our bodies

That transports oxygen + nutrients and helps us live

There is illness and disintegration

Between my bones that hold our posture

The same bones that allow us to move about

There is a sickly kind of marrow

Between our brow, eyes, lips, noses

Our cheeks, ears, and chins

There is a broken kind of symmetry

Between the marks on our body

Stretch marks, dark spots, acne, imperfections

There is judgment

Between our shoulders, there is our neck

Whose function I cannot remember

Our neck carries our head low

And I don’t quite remember the last time I used my head

Between the things

The things that make us human

There are fallacies

But I can still feel and bear through it all:

The cosmic vibrations that invade my vertebrae

The pain of reminiscing on a broken yesterday

It is in my blood to feel

It is a certain burden we are given

Under the certainty of uncertainty

From the blue arises certain opportunities

Euphoria, beautiful and brazen, give rise in my meditations

With every breath, dewed petals and pure snow

It is in my soul:

to feel

to taste

to lose

to sense

My senses are sharp because I feel the world around me

The viridescent jewel-like grapes in the produce aisle

The pearl white daisies that bloom lushly in otherwise barren fields

The yellow pages I flip through are like gold

I can feel

The things that have no purpose in our collective being

The things that still have a way of making me feel

I'm not sure why

My senses are sharp because I can feel

And because I can feel I can experience

I can experience all the glorious things the world have to offer

And so I am swept away to the rhythm of compassion

Bound to the astronomical genuine nature of man

Which is exuded from the place I came from

The first place I was able to feel

The author's comments:

I am a 16-year-old musician, student, and poet. I help run my school's literary magazine and debate club. Outside of school, you can see me planning events for an online community of over 13,000, and extensively writing and practicing piano. I have competed in piano competitions in the past and have performed at Carnegie Hall. The only thing you need to know about me, however, is that I'm very outspoken about my views on certain topics and love a good conversation!
