After we lay down on our man-made island,

I open my eyes, make them migrate

up from your face to the sky.

The stars, scattered like rolled dice,

bounce my vision around.

The clouds weave like the wispy white curtains

that will soon hang in my bedroom.

We sit up, hard wood and water beneath us.

The meteors that streak across the heavens

grant me a wish that I don’t know how to use.

The cool air winds around us

carrying the smell of smoke

and burning marshmallows.

I glance over at you

laying on your back, your eyes

reaching to pull in the light that shines down

from the sea of stars that expands forever,

settling like a blanket around us.

This piece is about the stars and specifically how much wonder they hold for me. I love how the sky seems to swallow the world.
