I spent all my nights

Sleepless.

I stared up at the stars

The way they glistened,

Shimmered,

Told me I wasn’t alone.

I felt the hope spread

Through my mind

Telling me 

That I could shine

Just like the stars.

Then one night

I noticed that one

Was brighter than the rest.

Astronomers called it the ‘moon’

I called it a friend.

I had heard there was a man in it

But of course that’s just silly

Superstition. 

I know the moon

Too well.

For I spent hours

Gazing at its beauty

Thinking of how

It played with the tides

Controlled the wolves

For they know the moon

Is powerful.

If I could be like the moon

I would be happy

At last.

And so I admired it

From miles away.

But one horrid night

My blinds were sealed shut

By those who think the moon

Is no better

Than the stars.

When I could wait no longer

I forced the window open

And quickly saw that my friend

Wasn’t

There. 

The moon was gone

Fallen from the sky

Sending the world

Plummeting into darkness.

Tears trickled down my face

Mourning my destroyed moon

And what the world will become

Without it.
