I am a High School Junior at The Nightingale-Bamford School in New York City. I serve as a featured columnist for,The Spectator, Nightingale's school newspaper. I am an aspiring writer hoping to study American Studies in College.
My grandma was born in Budapest, but she was born into hiding. She was 7 when she escaped to Long Island. Her bravery and her intelligence are beyond admirable. Yet, she is losing herself to memory loss. I created a portrait of someone I love, but she is no longer herself and I wanted to demonstrate this without saying it upfront. Writing it in Hungarian was a harder creative choice, but my grandma best remembers her memories in Hungarian so it felt most appropriate. I chose to include her culture that has also faded away with generations.
