I live on foundations
Like the memory of last summer’s sun.

From where I stand, the smallest glimpse of
The moon in the afternoon sky
Reminds me that there is another afternoon approaching.

And in its foggy sunlight so I record
The shifty shadows.

They tell me I am free.

That I can create some personal reflection
Of oblivion
That mimics my every slowing down
And articulate gesture
And use what I remember of the approaching
Afternoon to line my reflection
With wings
Drawn on by pink chalk
On Tennessee blacktops
So simmering with heat and unpredictable
As to whom they will next make fly.

Here,
Last summer inches her way into next summer
While I was planning road trips, and vacations,
And visiting new friends.

Here,
I lie outlined with pink chalk wings,
Intertwined with the memory of last summer’s sun.

This was recorded as the summer was ending and the old swing of things was starting up. Yet still, I age on even in old orders.
