There is a landing
a tiny town
not much more than
a railroad river trees
and this is where
the world ends.

The river is black.
A young couple, innocent
sits on the bridge swings their legs
and the river pools into a horrible ocean
and it is black and dead.

The sunset is excruciating,
wrong awful bright bright gold
that hurts your eyes,
and it melts into the inky ocean,
pollutes it further
and the sky and sea become indistinct and
blur together into a horrid unnatural smear
pouring dripping from the world's edge
over the names of the dead Albert others oh make it stop
this soupy sewer of straying souls

This piece is one of several inspired by a recent trip to the University of Michigan Museum of Art- this particular poem was inspired by the painting "A Monument in Rouen" by Hughie O'Donoghue.
