Who Would Have Known?

Who would have known?
That this be the place I end up in
Who would have known?
That he be the one I end up with
Who would have known?
That this be the life I lead

In this world
There lies confusion, so much of it
To the point where I can almost taste it
We say we know things
We think we know them
But we’re all liars, we don’t

We say we’re happy
When we’re not
We say everything is all right
When they’re not
We say words to comfort others
When we, ourselves, are not comforted

I can see the thoughts of all others around me
It is written across their faces, plain and clear
Hurt
Joy
Anger
Sadness
Their faces, their eyes tell me all
But is it so hard to believe that I, too, am suffering?

We’re all liars
We try not to hurt others
But we hurt ourselves in the process
We say it is for a good cause
When we know it is not

We like to protect those we love
We tell them that they are safe
But in our attempt to protect them
We endanger
We hurt
Them instead

Who would have known?
That a simple white lie could evolve
Into a dozen other lies
All covering that first little white lie
Who would have known?
That a simple white lie
Could hurt so much
In the long run
Who would have known?

Liars will lie about their lies
But in the end
What help would that do?
So I’ll tell you the facts
Details too
Listen carefully
I won’t repeat

I am a liar
And that’s the truth
I lie and lie
Unblinkingly
Thinking that no one would ever, ever find out
But I was wrong
I know that now
When damage has been done
And time has passed

One day, I sat down and started thinking about the world and my place within it. The sentiment of our world's inconsistency and the way people engage with one another inspired me to write this poem.

Thank you for liking my poem. (: Haha, your comments are very insightful. As for the ending, it was supposed to be somewhat 'abrupt' to portray the open-endedness and indefiniteness within life & society.

Wow.
I loved it :D
Amazing.
I'm speechless xD

The poem is beautiful <3 It's sentimental and profound. The ending is a little abrupt, but the poem is wonderful :)
