Painless

The pain envelopes my body
It caresses my heart and punctures a gaping wound through it

rapidly like venom, it runs through my veins and infects my entire being,
Spreading throughout my entire soul
Soon, the pain fades away
I cannot feel anything anymore
I am numb.

Perhaps this is not ideal
When the pain fades away, so does my entire being
I am present, but in my mind, I am drifting away
Isolated, I become
Fantasy becomes reality
At least when I hurt, I know I am real
I know that I am not a perfect being
Without my pain, I am just an empty shell of a human
I would rather hurt, than feel no pain at all
Every single soul hurts.

The author's comments:
I recently heard a new song by the band Lady Antebellum and some of the lyrics were "I'd rather hurt than feel no pain at all." I felt as though these lines had a deep meaning that can be applied to life. For this reason, I decided to explore and expand with these words a bit and create a poem, imagining what a person going through a hard time might be feeling.
