Growing Pains
I don’t want to grow up,
not yet anyway.
I’ve never seen an adult cry or fall about laughing,
I’d miss the freedom,
the weight of the world unknown.
I’d miss making mistakes with no consequences,
an adult has too much to lose.
My friends and I might not speak as often,
as the distractions of adult life take hold.
I’d have to get a job, when, really,
school’s boring enough for me.
I’d lose that innocence,
nothing would be new.
Family get togethers would be all wrong,
Without looking up for hugs, not down.
Tied down and gagged,
hardly able to move for fear of punishment.
I don’t want to grow up,
not yet anyway.
I think I’d rather grow down.
As when you are young you wish the years away
but,
eventually,
you just want to go back to the time
when you wanted to grow up.
