I see
Those girls
Sit on the bench
And I laugh
Sardonically
Because we used to sit there, too.
Before you left.
But then we exchanged
What we knew about ourselves
And not what we knew about
That girl’s fake best friend.

When I lounge at the beach,
I see the shore
The picturesque shore,
Obscured by harsh,
Foamy
Waves,
And I ask the wind
If that same water
Ever lapped up on your shore,
Where you are.
(Not that I care,
Of course.
Because we’ve both made new friends
To wonder about.
Right?)

And when I sleep,
In the endless night,
I remember that
You were never quite comfortable
When you were alone
In the dark
Or ever,
For that matter.
Is it lonely
Over there
Where you are?
I’d visit, I told you.
But it ended up being too far.
(Or maybe I just know
That you’ve made other friends
That you’d rather have visit you,
Where you are)

I wrote this about a friend that moved away, but it ended up sounding more romantic.
