Hell found me.
I walked into the front door,
Given my fate for the year,
I was nervous. I had fear.

Hell ignored me.
Period one, hour one,
Happy faces, tired eyes.
The start of the rest of our lives.

Hell watched me.
Period two, hour two,
Talkative shadows, loud lights,
The promise of homework filled nights.

Hell talked to me.
Period three, hour three,
Laughter and excitement,
Piles of paper on the desk,
My backpack was becoming a mess.

Hell mocked me.
Period four, hour four,
The realization I was doomed,
The half full cup is a lie,
I have to fight still to get by.

Hell hovered above me.
Period five, hour five,
Relaxing silence blanketed the air,
Happiness overcame me,
We can do this, don’t you see?

Hell cowered
Period six, hour six
Thinking on times ahead.
Summer thoughts, fading,
I sit waiting.

Hell backed up.
Period seven, hour seven,
Summer had definitely ended.
The first day fears had disappeared.
The next couple years are near.

Hell walked away.
School isn’t a prison, or hell itself,
It is the beginning, not the end,
Don’t you see?
All you have to do, is to be.

The author's comments:
I wrote this because on the first day of school, some people are sad that summer has ended, but as they go through the day they realize that school might not be so bad.
