A young handsome man only a protégé
Student of Apollo and Zephiros he may be.
His pride and love a holy deer
Mistaken and killed by his own spear.
Despair and dread fills the young
Turns to the gods for he might be hung.
Tears roll for eternity
Now stands in our cemetery.

The author's comments:
It tells the story of Cyparissus, a handsome man from Kea and the grandson of Heracules. He accidentally kills his own deer and with his despair turns into a Cypress tree which is now considered as the mourning tree, with a reference to the last line “Now stands in our cemetery”. Next time you go to a cemetery look out for a cypress tree and look at its shape. Does it look as though Cyparissus is mourning?
