In the Darkness
Crunch crunch crunch crunch
The sound of my footsteps
Is thunderous as each foot fall lands in a pile of dead leaves.
But it will be worth it this Halloween.
Trick-or-treaters everywhere:
Ghosts, ghouls, witches, and skeletons
Even a marshmallow every now and then.
What they do not know is even though
They feel safe
They are not.
Bone white and sore from clinching my blade
My fingers loosen up
As I choose my prey—
A five year old boy in a wizard costume.
That is the one.
I stalk behind him,
Slowly reaching out.
He turns around,
Eyes wide with fear.
He turns tail and flees.
Swish!
My plastic knife
Cuts through the air,
And stops inches before
Hitting its mark…
