A Morning in Coyote Gulch
The walls do not confine me here.
 They stretch into the sky:
 Walls of the cathedral that Nature built.
 The sun peeks over them tenderly
 To wake the vibrant canyon up.

 This place is no labyrinthine expanse;
 It is a familiar hallway.
 The river’s bends are as well known
 As the sidewalks I stepped across
 On my way home from school.

 Above, arcane ruins are not unoccupied.
 A friend dwells in them and calls back
 When I shout up to him.
 The animals all must know my name,
 Because they no longer call me by it.

 They call this land a lonely waste, but I am its companion.
 I will never desert it.
