Look at who I was
Look at who I was.
I was a little girl, playing in the sun.
I was a child off to church.
I was a bubble of laughter in the dandelions.
The light shown down
And shown over me.
I was an innocent,
Unaware of what life turns us into.
Cynical, cold, unfeeling.
Hurt, tortured, twisted.
We no longer see the light,
But the darkness.
We no longer see the joy,
But the sadness.
In a world where everything
Is followed with “except…”
Or “but…”
Or “only if…”
We grow dark.
God means less.
Love means less.
Life means less.
No longer allowing ourselves
To simply fall in love.
We are now aware of every horrible thing
The fates might do to scorch us now.
No longer content to frolic in the sun
We are now aware of the burn that might follow.
We are no longer
“Beautiful little fools”
In this world.
We are pain.
We are loss.
We are suffering.
Instead of growing faith
We grow doubt.
We see the world around us
And the drugs, and the lies
And the sex, and the scandal.
And how could this world
Be so beautiful to little eyes
And so cruel to grown ones?
Be careful little eyes what you see
You might see the dark that’s killing me.
I was a dreamer.
I was a star-gazer.
I was a lover.
Look at who I was.
