we were sucking on pennies
while they swallowed sugar.
copper-mouthed,
we pricked our fingers,
one for each lie,
blood dripping like sprinkles
on our parents’ pristine white carpets.

our throats were corroded,
rust on our tongues.
the gears in our jaws locked
and we could only whisper our fears.

The author's comments:
This poem uses metal as a theme for teen rebellion and confusion. By lying to our parents and rebelling against authority and society, we are only doing ourselves harm.
