Colors of the Man
What is skin but a layer of protection for our frail bodies?
What is color but the way our eyes perceive light?
Then answer me this:
Why does it matter what color a man's skin is?
Why is it even taken into such careful consideration?
Remove the man and leave only the color and we think nothing of it
We think nothing of a blue balloon, a red flower
We don't look twice at a black dress or a white hat
We don't bat an eye at brown chocolate or the yellow sun
Then why do we judge the man whose skin is brown?
Why do we judge the woman whose hair is blonde?
Why do we judge the child whose features are different from our own?
Why do we look down upon those who are too weak to look up?
Why do we trample the small beneath our feet
Instead of picking them up and helping them walk?
What good does it do to mock differences?
Can we choose what we look like or who we were born to be?
Perhaps I have dark skin
Perhaps I have fair skin
Perhaps I hail from Asia
Perhaps I hail from Europe
Perhaps I come from America
Perhaps I come from another planet altogether
I promise you this:
If ever an alien were to set foot upon this Earth
He would go screaming back to his planet
"What are these foul creatures who treat each other so cruelly based on nothing but appearance? They are all of the same race! They are the human race, are they not?"
But even then we would not see our faults
We would refuse to accept them
For some cannot stand the sight of the man whose skin is brown
Some cannot stand the sight of the woman whose hair is blonde
Some cannot stand the sight of the child whose features are different from their own
There is only one thing anyone can say to these blind people
But I am not the one to say it so I shall not
I will leave you with this thought in mind:
Equality cannot be measured and neither can it be truly defined
Unless you use a dictionary
But the dictionary cannot show you what it is
Only you can make it happen
Only you can feel its effects
Only you
