"You have not even begun to scratch the surface of how important your life means to not only me, [y]our friends and [y]our family, but your life, which is a gift for the world that is waiting for you." - Brent Smith.

Chorus leading,
Drums beating,
A dead soldier,
Walks through the flames.

Ashes and dust,
Fire and rust,
A dead soldier,
Pries through the ashes.

Strength fleeting,
Heartbeat receding,
The dead soldier,
Never to return.

Families lost,
The lives it cost,
A dead soldier,
The price to pay.

In freedom great,
With all the hate,
The dead soldier,
Mocked and framed.

A long embrace,
Of blissful grace,
A dead soldier,
Feels no pain.

Of all this chaos,
War in which destroys,
A dead soldier,
Tells no story. . .

The author's comments:
A little late (a lot late), but here is my memorial day poem. We had a tribute to all the fallen Vietnam soldiers at our school the day i wrote this and at one point a man (representing a dead soldier) walked through a bunch of smoke from a smoke machine and the poem just came to me. Hints of "why are we doing this to our citizens?" mixed with "war is honorable only in death" mixed with a slight political aloofness. Enjoy!
