The faded, gray, worn leather of the glove
Meeting the smooth, stitched-up ball.
Picher looks left,
Then right.
Bases loaded.
Three balls, two strikes,
Two outs.
Bottom of the
Ninth.
Catcher signals fastball.
No.
Curve?
Perfect.
Looking up at the scoreboard
Home: 12
Visitors: 13
So far winning
Unless… the batter gets a hit.
With victory in sight, he rears
Back and throws.
Crack!
The ball flies over the outfielder’s heads.
Homerun.
Home: 16
Visitors: 13.
So much for winning.
