"We love the things we love for what they are."
Robert Frost

Nineteen sapphire petals hang
Precarious and feeble from their stem.
Delightful and vibrant,
Wonderful life.

The wind is their music,
The earth their dance floor.
Stealing water from the source,
Letting nature be their guide.

Ten dark birds swarm;
Peace left behind,
With new hope of a meal.
Natural life.

Storm clouds observe from above,
While threats of lightning go unnoticed.
A drumroll from the clouds —
Unnoticed.

Two golden butterflies dance
Among nineteen petals.
Untouched
By starving birds,
A beautiful pair.

A drumroll from the clouds.
Birds still
Swarm.
Petals still
Sway.

Two butterflies
Fly away.

A flash of lightning,
As fear swallows nature whole.
Two butterflies
Are safe.

Two butterflies,
No companion but each other,
Are safe.

Two butterflies
Fly against the wind.
Free.

The author's comments:

I wrote this to hint at the flaws in relationships and social status. The two butterflies are outcasts, yet they are the only ones who escape the storm.
