Widow's Burden
Every time he asks,
it is harder to answer,
harder to fabricate another
fantastical lie.
She can only smooth down the coat
draped haphazardly across an old chair,
and reassure him that his father
will return home soon.
She can only gaze up into the
darkening clouds,
peer out over the stone walled city,
and hope that,
one day,
he’d stop asking.
