The color white has been defined as a symbol of purity, empty of all sin

but when I see white I see the color of skin

skin that set out to destroy my people and has since then been

trained to hate the way we talk, the way we walk, the way we dress

schooled to oppress

taught to sit back and watch us digress

into a flaming-hot mess

and sit at their fancy office desk

and continue to push this glass ceiling upon my chest

until I near my very last breath

but even as I exclaim “I can’t breathe” 

not a single soul will intercede
