White
The color white has been defined as a symbol of purity, empty of all sin
but when I see white I see the color of skin
skin that set out to destroy my people and has since then been
trained to hate the way we talk, the way we walk, the way we dress
schooled to oppress
taught to sit back and watch us digress
into a flaming-hot mess
and sit at their fancy office desk
and continue to push this glass ceiling upon my chest
until I near my very last breath
but even as I exclaim “I can’t breathe”
not a single soul will intercede
and though we find him guilty the judge still disagrees.
