Favorite Quote:
"Fiction is a lie that tells us true things, over and over again"
-Neil Gaiman

If I should sprout
A cloak of wings
And join no flock
And fly not south
But forward,
Would gentle wind
Exhale on shrouded feathers
And grow me twigs
To weave a comforter
For fish-hook toes?
I’ll soar alone
Have no home
But glide over the riverbed
Searching for answers
Nay, searching for fish
Leaving behind
Those ugly ducklings
Who did not see
And did not understand
The borrowed world
They hallucinate everyday.
I am purer than every each.
My independent eye
Will act on impulse
An instinct, Animalia.
I will drink no ferment
Brew no tea
Just dive for aquatics
Snatch a few serpents
Feast!
I will see no man
And think no poisonous thoughts
And my silhouette against the moon
Will be that of
A fantastic beast
A creature-
Of God?
My own commander.
I will perch on prickly pears
And choke on water hemlock seeds.
I will duck my head
‘Neath sonnets of daisies
And a buried seed will be my pome,
My neighbors,
In this wild.

The author's comments:

Have you read Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer? This poem was inspired by that book. It is supposed to be as if Chris McCandless wrote the poem and he was pretending to be, or writing from the point of view of, an osprey. I tried to include some of McCandless' philosophies, train of thought, and beliefs in the piece.
