A poet can survive everything but a misprint.
- Oscar Wilde

What about the friends of the depressed?
What about those forced to keep the ones they love alive?

We are the ones who persuaded you off rooftops
And called ambulances to the scene

We are the ones who spent hours
Comforting you
Even if your negativity made us go home
And weep

We are the ones
Who weren’t allowed to have a difficult day
Because you needed us to be strong

We are the ones who talked to you late at night
Even if we hadn’t slept in days
Because we wanted to make sure you were okay

We are the ones you asked to keep vows of silence
That nobody should ever be asked to keep

We are the ones who loved you
Even though you would never believe us

So when you recovered and said you did it all by yourself
You shouldn’t have been surprised when we walked away
Because you were not alone
We were always there

And we almost broke ourselves trying to fix you

I see a lot of poetry around mental health experiences from the the perspective of the suffer, but nothing about the struggles their loved ones have to face. This is dedicated to those who have supported the mentally ill. You are the bravest of all.
