When did you know
The willow was cut & the
Stars were nothing but fire?
And the roads were not
Endless, but empty,
Dirty alleys and wilted fields
For miles on miles?
When did you know
There was nothing, & the
Thought of comfort
Burned like sin?
In the hands of your own
Horrors, or in the arms of
Lonely skin?
When did you know?
When did you know you
Were the willow, and I
Nothing but flame?
When did you know
You screamed not fire
But whispered only
His name?
