we are all

islands,

wading in a sea of misunderstanding

and drowning,

in the waves of confusion

The short poem gives the reader only the "tip of the ice berg", the wording alluding something bigger. Describing us ALL as islands makes the world suddenly a lot bigger, distant, and lonelier; separating us all from each other. And comparing misunderstandings and confusion to the ocean gives a sense of mystery.
