The Tigris and the Furnace
This life is like the Tigris,
So swift, so dark, so deep
With waters wanting to sweep away
Any who close their eyes to sleep
‘Tis so hard to break the surface
To grasp a gasp of air
Before the turbidity snatches down again
And pulls you to who-knows-where
Take me from these waters, my Jesus
Take me to your tranquil mountain stream
Where one has the time and ability
To think, to laugh, to dream
The Tigris threatens a watery grave
But you offer perfect peace
When life demands a hurry
You promise relief.
Then when I am forced into the fiery furnace
Consuming fire all I can see
You are there in that furnace too
Bearing the burden, sheltering me
Deliver me from furnace and waters alike
I do not want them anymore
I just want to stare into Your crystal brook
Reflecting Your love, my Lord.
