Better Off
Pretending is my mission,
My issue and my job.
I'm watching you alone now
As you drown your mother's cup
And I think, "God, you need some love."
And I wake up every morning
With the tar glued to my mouth
I've tried to be outspoken
But the words just won't come out
So I wrote all of it down
The words you never read
But we're better off that way.
As I think I can't remember
The last time we ever spoke
My typewriter is broken
I've filled books for you to read
And I know I wrote too much
But now the clock is ticking
And your breath is made of smoke
All those words unspoken
You never meant to find.
But still, I wrote it down.
The words I saved for you.
It was better off that way.
I've won you all the tickets,
And you've herded every prize.
The mirror that I bought you
Showed us your mother's face
And I'm sorry tat you cried.
My back is strained from lifting,
I've long broken my pen.
I drank the ink inside it
To keep from giving in.
But I know you never read.
And truly, it's okay.
I'm better off that way.
