"If we did all the things we were capable of, we would literally astound ourselves."

-Thomas Edison

I've always been around, always nearby,
A call away if you need me.
Around to talk, but mostly to listen,
To be what you need me to be.

And you know I'm here, and you know I'll hear,
If all you need is an open ear.
I'll offer a smile, company for a while,
Happy to provide some cheer.

Call me for help, and I'll be there in a second.
With work or with people I do what I can.
And if I can help than I'm happy, too -
Because if it's a friend, you know I'll always come through.

PRECHORUS:
But now I'm starting to notice, I'm starting to see,
Because I like friends, too, but you only like me
When you're in a fix, and it's one I can fix
And with an alternative, you're gone...

CHORUS:
Am I just a convenience to you? Only good 'til you find someone better?
Appreciated 'cause you got no one else...
Only good enough for now?
(X2)

It only takes a second to make an observation,
But once observed, it's hard to let it go.
And now that I've started to wonder,
This will never work, 'cause I'll always need to know.

PRECHORUS:
And now I've started to notice, I've started to see,
Because I like friends, too, but you only like me
When you're in a fix, and it's one I can fix
And with an alternative, you're gone...

CHORUS:
Am I just a convenience to you?
Only good 'til you find someone better?
Appreciated 'cause you got one one else...
Only good enough for now?
(X2)

BRIDGE:
If we just stop being friends, I'll be okay -
I swear, the world won't end.
But it really can't go on like this
I'm a use disguised as a friend...

CHORUS:
Am I just a convenience to you?
Only good 'til you find someone better?
Appreciated 'cause you got no one else...
Only good enough for now?
(X2)

The author's comments:
This piece was sort of inspired by a particular friend of mine, and sort of inspired by people in general - those times when you're standing around, and someone you sort of know is standing around, and you bond out of mutual loneliness - but it's not like you really genuinely like each other. As for the specific friend who inspired me to write it... Same idea, I guess, of bonding because you're lonely, but most of the time I was writing I was thinking about someone specific, rather than just random interactions.

I haven't recorded this one yet, but I'll post a link in the comments when I do!
