Above all else, guard your heart.

(verse 1)

I never really knew you, and that, I'm sad to say
There was always time for that; I saw you every day
I've been so busy with my own life; driven, almost insane
Never understanding my perfection was all in vain
I guess I shouldn't feel as if I've lost a close, dear friend
But perhaps we would have had that, had your life not reached an end

(chorus)

Goodbye, you beautiful person
Goodbye to your sweet heart
I hope it counts for something, you've made me think about my part
I hope, now, to be a person of strength and soul, just like yourself
So that when my life is over, He will say to me, “Faithful servant, you've done well.”

(verse 2)

You meant so much to everyone
You, dear, were truly loved
And maybe that's the reason why you're needed up above
I wish that I could give my life so they could have you back
You're the one who deserves to live, possessing everything I lack
Instead, though, I will cherish this gift that is my life
And yes, dear, I do promise I will live to share your light

(chorus)

Goodbye, you beautiful person
Goodbye to your sweet heart
I hope it counts for something, you've made me think about my part
I hope, now, to be a person of strength and soul, just like yourself
So that when my life is over, He will say to me “Faithful servant, you've done well.”

(bridge)

You lived your life for Jesus, and it ended far too soon
But we'll take comfort knowing you found more than just a tomb
I know you're never dead; you're happy; you're alive
You're now living in the eternal glory of our savior, Jesus Christ

(alternate chorus)

So goodbye, you ray of sunshine
Goodbye, you precious gift
I'll be thinking of your smile when my spirits need a lift
I'm sorry I didn't get to know you, but one day, dear, I will
And then, for you, I'll sing this song of all you made me feel

The author's comments:
Although I haven't written any music for this yet, this is a song I wrote for a boy that I had the pleasure of having as a classmate. Derek was a year younger than I, but was in my French class. Unfortunately, I never took the time to get to know him or to become friends. Whenever I did talk to him, however, I always was in awe of him. Everyone loved Derek. He was smart, popular, good looking, a member of student council, and a starter on the varsity basketball team. None of that was what impressed me, though. I was completely touched by his sweet personality. No matter what, he always had a smile on his face and an encouraging word to say, and he treated everyone the same. He lived his life so fully and beautifully. Last Friday, Derek and his best friend were in a car crash. Both of those sweet boys lost their lives. I wrote this song while trying to sort out my emotions about the entire incident.

Oh, it's no biggy. But thank you. :) I'm thinking it will be a slow song; hopefully somewhat melodic. I'm working on music for it right now on the piano.

Sorry it took so long. This piece could have easily been a poem as well as lyrics for a song. The chorus was touching and was my favorite part. What kind of music did you plan to go with these lyrics?
