3 o’clock on a summer afternoon,
Asphalt baking in the blazing heat.
It’s days like these where the weather’s bittersweet—
Bees buzzing, butterflies zip and zoom.
The sky crinkles her brow as dark clouds loom.
Thunder is rumbling in the distance; the sun retreats.
The moist air fills with static. The clouds are ready to deplete.
All is charged but calm, awaiting the coming boom.

Crack! – boom! The sudden thunderclap sounds!
The rain pours, drenching the green grass.
A lightning bolt cracks the sky in two,
Thunder roars, rattling windowpanes as the rain pounds.
Wildlife retreats, waiting for the storm to pass.
After a while, the rain slows. The world is born anew.

The author's comments:

Ever since she was young, Emma Sandidge has enjoyed writing poetry. She began writing haikus when she was around eight years old, and she has continued into high school. Emma likes to write her poems about nature, and she feels that writing about nature can be therapeutic and often is a way to express her thoughts using aspects of nature, such as a thunderstorm. Emma hopes to continue writing as a hobby while she studies applied mathematics in college.
