The Best Manifestation of Frustration

Oh why must I write a sonnet for class?

I’d understand a ballad or haiku.

If asked about sonnets most would say “pass!”

Tell me, do they mean anything to you?

This dated form should be left in the past,

Students would rejoice, “we’re finally free!”

I know it’s my fault, I left this for last,

But who’d blame me for postponing misery?

As humans, as writers, we’ve come too far,

On free expression, we must now insist.

It’s apparent that restrictions only mar,

Sonnet proponents must cease and desist.

“Moaning gets you nowhere!” goes the refrain,

But to get this done, I’ve channeled my pain.

Kelly is a high school senior from Los Angeles, California. A lover of almost all poetry, she's not the biggest fan of writing sonnets–particularly by a class deadline!
