The nonfiction book, The Port Chicago 50, by Steve Sheinkin, displays the hardships of African- Americans in the mid-1900s. In this book, African Americans enlisted in the military get assigned to load ammunition. They were never properly taught how to load ammunition what resulted in a ship exploding, which caused multiple injuries and deaths of African-Americans. This causes 50 men to decide to stop loading ammunition which is perceived as “mutiny”, and caused them to go on trial. The verdict declared the main character, Joe small, as well as the other 49 men, to be guilty. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys nonfiction and is interested in history and civil rights.
