Lit Response for "Mother to Son"
Do you think it is possible to have a perfect life? In the poem, “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes, the mother has nothing compared to a perfect life. In fact, she compares her life to broken stairs that represent her painful life. The theme of the poem is to never give up, but rather to push forward.
In the poem the mom shows how she won’t give up and how she is still pushing through the tough times; for example, “I’se still climbin’, and life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” This shows how she explains to her son how hard of a life she has had. Another example is, “And sometimes going in the dark where there ain’t been no light.” Because she went through a tough life, Langston Hughes’ mother doesn’t want him to have a hard life; therefore, Langston Hughes; mom shows how even though she has fell at times she is still standing and fighting for what she wants.
The theme of Langston Hughes’ poem is that you can’t depend on anyone because they won’t be there when you need them the most. Langston Hughes’ mother is going through tough times and she never had anyone to depend on.
