Running
I’ve never given running much thought
I don’t know why I like it so much
Perhaps it’s feeling of a beating heart
Reminding me I’m still alive for another day
The fresh air blowing my hair and voices all away
Maybe the breaking of metal chains around me
as my breathing speeds up. Letting me become
the person no one will ever see.
Or maybe it’s because I run from the darkness.
And afraid of going nowhere in my life.
The constant thud of my feet hitting the pavement
Forgetting one more mistake I made today
Leaving problems and people behind me
On the highway all of those problems disappear.
Or maybe it’s the sunset at the end. Assuring me that
Everything will be okay. To keep the fight up. Or the rain
That sometimes falls just when I need it. To hide my tears
Because the highway is just a piece of road that I run on
