Why I’m Pro-Gun Control

Gun control is necessary in order to have a peaceful city, country and world. Without gun control, many lives will be taken for unnecessary reasons. Not only should things be settled in a different way, but violence is never the answer. Those who do not support gun control show they are for violence and are not thinking in terms of safeness for all. This is why I am pro-gun control

Gun control is a controversial topic that has been around for decades in the United States and all around the world. The second amendment states, “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” (U.S. Const. am. 2)The questions at hand are as follows; what does a “well-regulated militia” entail, should the background checks require more and what are the reasons for gun control? There are two sides to this argument which include the people for gun control who believe guns should be taken off the streets and the ones against gun control who believe it is a right as a citizen of the United States to carry a gun.

The first reason gun control should be in existance is because without law saying otherwise, a gun can be in anyone’s hands. If stricter gun laws were made, more lives would be saved. Not only should there be a standard background check, but I am also a strong supporter of medical background checks. The Council on Foreign Relations states that, “A so-called "gun show loophole," codified in the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986, effectively allows anyone, including convicted felons, to purchase firearms without a background check.” ("U.S. Gun Policy: Global Comparisons”). If there are no boundaries to who can have a gun, anyone and everyone is put at risk. Once it is legal for anyone to have a gun, nothing can be done about it.

Another reason gun control should be enforced is because if not, a mentally unstable person could get a hold of one and do something out of their control. By allowing someone unstable to have a gun, people are just setting themselves up for disastrous conclusions. Dr. Alan Heister states, “Adam Lanza's actions are explained solely as a manifestation of mental illness” (Huffington Post). If guns were not easy to get then Sandy Hook Elementary would be normal and all of those parents would not be childless. By allowing this problem to occur a first time is unforgivable; doing nothing to stop it from happening again is unprincinpled. Keeping the current laws as they are makes it seem as if there is no sympathy for what happened and now nothing will change.

The final reason that being pro-gun control is effective is the simple fact of safety. Not only is it unsafe for just anyone to have a gun, it is also unsafe for everyone (trained or not) to walk around, armed, at all times. There have been serious incidents where guns were unintentionally fired, but still caused a big problem when they did. In a recent study they have found that, “rather than being used for self-defense, guns in the home are 22 times more likely to be involved in accidental shootings, homicides, or suicide attempts. For every one time a gun in the home was used in a self-defense or legally justifiable shooting, there were 4 unintentional shootings, 7 criminal assaults or homicides, and 11 attempted or completed suicides” (Kellermann, A. L., "Injuries and Deaths due to Firearms in the Home"). Having guns available to anyone in a home at any time can lead to serious problems, injuries or deaths. Many cases have also come up where a teenager in the house takes the family gun to school or winds up shooting his own family members. Accident Analysis and Prevention states, “for kids ages 5 to 14, the mortality rate is 14 times higher in high gun ownership states than low gun ownership states. For infants and toddlers, ages 0 to 4, the mortality rate is 17 times higher in high gun ownership states than low gun ownership states.” (Matthew Miller, Deborah Azrael& David Hemenway). Taking guns out of the hands of all people will decrease risks of any non-necessary problems occurring.

The biggest claim that people who are anti-gun control have is that it is taking away their rights to bear arms as a part of the second amendment. ("Against Gun Control." ThinkQuest. Oracle Foundation.) Yes, this is true, but not only is this claim unfair but it is exactly what gun laws will change. While the people allowed to carry guns feel safer, now the people who don’t want to be around guns feel unsafe. It almost acts as a lose-lose situation but by eliminating the fear of injury or death would be more worth it in the long run. Why should someone fear a gun when if no one had or could carry them, everybody would be safe?

In conclusion, gun control is necessary for a safe place for all. Without gun control, a gun can get in the wrong hands. Also without background and medical checks, someone mentally unstable can get a gun. Overall, having it to were mostly anyone can get a gun is unsafe for everyone. Even though many people believe it would be for the good of the people, I do not think so.

Disclaimer: this is my personal opinion based on MY OWN logic. please point out its flaws so I may improve.

If a criminal who is intent on committing a crime, what will stricter gun laws do to stop them? Murder is already illegal, right? If they already are willing to go through with it, what's to stop them from either finding another weapon, or finding a gun illegally? They could just find a illegal weapons dealer, saving them time, money, and probably be able to get a full auto weapon instead of just a semi-automatic(for those who don't know, semi auto means that only one bullet gets fired when you pull the trigger. full auto is a machine gun, which citizens cannot legally on without a permit. and the background checks for a machine gun are extensive enough that a criminal can surely not pass... you also have to pay a tax of around 4,000 dollars extra). My point is, if a criminal is set on breaking a law regardless of how hard you make it for them to legally buy a gun, they will simply find a more creative and possibly even deadlier way to go through with their goals. Additionally, if(let's assume that every law abiding citizen would agree) you make it against the law to own guns outright, you disarm the good guys, who are responsible, and as I stated before, the criminals already have no issue with breaking laws(hence the will to murder) and will be shooting fish in a barrel. I hope that I am explaining things logically, and do not come across as ignorant. The second amendment will not be infringed. ANY government or organization that seeks to repeal it is tyrannical.

I respect your argument, and acknowledge your claims that guns are used 22 times more for murder than defense, but I would like to respectfully disagree with you. While guns are used for way more harm than help, without guns, America, being one of the largest, if not the largest, economical powers on Earth, would be an open target to attacks from other countries seeking to expand. One of the main reasons America is not often attacked is that other countries do not know how many guns we have. They also know that almost all U.S. citizens would grab their guns and resist the attack. And knowing that all efforts would be futile, America remains safe from foreign invasions. And in reality, an invasion would be much more deadly than a few thousand deaths a year.

Gun control will never solve anything. I realize that the ultimate goal is to save lives, but guns are to easy to get a hold of. Take drugs as an example, there are laws that prohibit possession of them, but look at how many people still get a hold of them. All gun control will do is leave law abiding people defenseless when a criminal gets a fire arm in their hands.

Guns are an important part of self defense. If someone is trying to rob you with a knife and you whip out a gun theyre going to run the other direction

Before you attack the individual that thanked you for the helpful comments you should adjust the attitude. I'd argue that you should master the English language before you rip ito soeone.  That attack was neither helpful nor warrented.  As for the "hours" of research, post your sources otherwise its an opinion piece.

Thank you for having this! I have been writing a counter argument on gun control and this has really helped me. I just wanted to thank you!

lol tf u a grown man on a teenage site... this is clearly a site for TEENagers so if it was nice when u were a TEEN, then posting negitive things like this isnt helping anybod and neither is it constructive at all. And before you knock my work, I did hours of research and got a 120/110 on it.

No offense to KaylaaLovee, but she needs to do better research. For one thing she needs to understand the progun side of these argument instead of just assuming that we are for violence and against saftey. Most of the progun community is against gun control because we feel that it violates our Second Amendment Right to Keep and Bear Arms by making it difficult for law biding Americans to obtain firearms. We also feel that it is wrong to punish gun owners, who are overwelming law biding for the misuse of firearms committed by a small minority. "The first reason gun control should be in existance is because without law saying otherwise, a gun can be in anyone's hands." Well, I hate to be the one to point this out, but the criminal element will always be able to obtain guns, no matter what the law says. Criminals make careers out of doing things that are illegal. That's why we call them criminals. Guns are no exception. As for the so-called gun show loophole it is worth pointing out that the overwelming majority of the sellers at gun shows are federally licensed  dealers, which are required to do background checks. Also, the the Justice Department once did a study that showed that only 2% of guns used in crimes originated at gun shows.  For the case of Adam Lanza, I think the writer should have been more specific about the type of gun laws that she thinks would have prevented the tragedy at Sandy Hook. Considering that Lanza murdered his mother and stole her guns, I'm not sure how another law would have made a difference. Also, the writer also cited the Kellerman Study and while I think it's nice that she at least attempted to show some factual evidence to back up her beliefs, the study has been long debunked. Many of Kellerman's colleagues, many of which were progun control, criticized the study because they felt that it was put together in a sloppy matter. One of the problems of the study is that it only takes into account those who were killed with firearms and not those who were wounded or scared away once a gun was brandished. There were even occasions where Kellerman counted guns that were brought into the home by intruders. It's ironic that the writer takes great joy in belittling people who want to carry guns, since states who have made it easier for people to carry concealed weapons have seen reductions in crime. Studies conducted by economist John Lott Jr., as well as the Justice Department have shown this. Also firearms are used in self-defense much more often then in cirme. The numbers range anywhere between 100,000-2,000,000 a day.

It was nice when I was a teen and thought that I knew it all. Fortunately, back then in the Stone Age, I had teachers who insisted that I do actual research and find out the truth of things instead of just repeating what was popular in the culture.  This is the type of article that gets the Egyptian pyramids located in China, the Civil War in 1920, and the Henry VIII named so because he had eight wives.
