An Empty Contradiction

Who’d rather cry than laugh, sad and hollow?
For feelings feel more when they cannot hide.
This night I weep inside, as cold as snow.

No more can the day be night than can know
The body how to laugh when grieved inside.
Who’d rather cry than laugh, sad and hollow?

Though be the face all merry, bright, aglow,
It’s but a player’s disguise, cheery-eyed.
This night I weep inside, as cold as snow.

Each phantom tear, each ghostly sob is slow
To end a laugh, to face and soul divide.
Who’d rather cry than laugh, sad and hollow?

In empty pockets with holes do I stow
The masquerading smiles and bouncy stride—
This night I weep inside, as cold as snow.

Relentless echoes of cheerful sorrow
Haunt me as my subterfuge I abide.
Who’d rather cry than laugh, sad and hollow?
This night I weep inside, as cold as snow.

And the tears that fall glide into Space
Echoing off the static walls of void,
One by one does Nothing each drip erase.
