"Believe that life is worth living and your belief will help create the fact." --William James

I used to be crazy.
I climbed trees,
And scraped knees.
I ruined clothes,
And dug holes.
I loved swimming,
And craved winning.

Thunderstorms were pirate wars.
And where daylight rarely ended,
Playful fights never surrendered.

Then one day, the sun grew lazier.
I woke the next day, even crazier!
I left who I was
To be someone new.
I gave up myself
To fit in with you.

I traded in my toys
To start kissing on boys.
I curled my lashes and painted my eyes
Only for people not to realize.

I pouted my lips
And got paid in tips.
The sky lost its blue,
And the wind its tune.

I learned to think fast,
And I learned rather soon.
But isn’t it funny how
Today it’s all we ever do?
We ponder ourselves and latest trends,
We ponder our cars and new fake friends.

If our thoughts were gold,
We would weigh quite little.
Our habits grow old,
And our lives become brittle.

But one thing survives,
And it holds true!
Remember the child
Who was once you.

When life moves fast,
Take a look back
At the seas and trees
And vivid memories.

Smell the chalks, the malts,
And the somersaults.
You are the person who played,
Who waved, and who smiled.
That wondrous adventure’s lived
Within you all the while.

I was inspired to write this while lying awake late one night. I was pondering what it means to grow up and how we leave a part of ourselves behind when we do.
