Lament on Paper
These words are tears I haven't cried,
Kept with my longings, deep inside,
Each one to show how what I feel
Invisible to you, is real;
From aching heart to flowing ink
To tell the world of what I think-
How smiles are the mask I wear
Across the panic of despair-
Yet times that I would voice my pain
With drops of rapid, soothing rain,
I find they rarely ever fall,
Too precious to be lost at all;
The grief that moves me, too profound
To be a sorrow with a sound
For eyes who seldom understand.
Heart overflowing needs my hand
To free emotion from its cage
And pour its pathos on a page
That listens, quiet, as I write,
The feelings I have kept from sight.
