The glass pane opened into the tragically clear sky

that would not permit a longed-for delay

A hard embrace ensued before the window’s sunny backdrop

Their hug was soundproof, everything around them lulled

Despite the stampede of flyers shooting by like bullets

The silence was shattered when loudspeaker crackled in preparation,

“Last call for flight B6.”

“Last call for flight B6 to New York, New York.”

Slowly slipping out of reach

He has no choice but to walk away

Letting the drum roll of luggage wheels fade into nothing

Leaving her all alone in the crowd

The author's comments:

This piece is about leaving a loved one behind or being left behind. People face this all the time when a child goes to college, a parent goes overseas, or a loved one travels for work. Being apart from someone you care about is one of the hardest things to go through and this poem shows the moment of departure when it hurts the most.
