I Wish I'd Broken Your Heart
I wish I’d broken your heart.
I wish you’d looked at me with red eyes,
And begged me to not leave,
And reached for my hands,
Even though your touch would be cold.
Cold, like tears soaking through a mask.
I wish I’d made you cry.
I wish I’d torn your heart into pieces-
And it sounds cold and cruel and nonsensical
To say that I wish I’d broken your heart
Because I care about you.
See, if your heart had been broken,
I’d know it was mine to break in the first place-
And if you’d cried, maybe
I’d have dried your tears
By running my fingers along your cheek.
Maybe, if your hand had reached for mine,
I'd have wanted to not let go-
And maybe, if your eyes were as red as your lips,
I’d have waited for the day I could kiss those lips.
I wish I’d broken your heart,
Because then I’d have known
You wanted me to stay.
