Silver Heels
The way you walk me home is like the way
I wear my silver heels--shaky, unsure.
The first time, I remember, was the day
I really fell for you. I'd tripped before,
but not the way my heel was wrenched into
the sidewalk crack. I fell. And when I glanced
back up, your smile made me dizzy, too.
And then-oh dear!-you offered me your hand.
Well, I was seeing hearts and feeling these
odd butterflies. I must have lost my mind
right there between the sidewalk cracks. Oh please,
just let me live, I'd thought, your hand in mine.
And just the same dumb way I did that day,
I fall each day you walk me home, shaky.
