Cross my Heart
Driving into Nazareth
 Clutching a smile in
The palm of my right hand
 You were supposed to be
 In the passenger’s seat
But things didn’t go according to plan

 Honey, I miss the way
 You sang about the weather
And how we’d all fall down
 I’m prayin’ to the clouds
 I’m crying out loud
 But life ain’t a merry-go-round

Give ‘em an inch and they take a yard
And the next thing ya know
 You’re six feet under
Let ‘em play with a drop a rain
 And then-
You’re caught in the middle of thunder

So let it ring from the hills of freedom
 Sign away my rights
Cross my heart and hope to die
Baby, why you still on my mind?

 I forgot my directions
And shot it up to third gear
Out the window went north and west
 Tuesday’s gone but
 Wednesday’s smilin’ at me
I pretend you’re dust, but, baby-
 You’re still the best

So let it ring from the hills of freedom
 Sign away my rights
Cross my heart and hope to die
Baby, why you still on my mind?
