I Thought You Should Know
I thought you should know
your words were unexpected like a five-
inch snow in Alabama's summertime
and beautiful like chasing fireflies
at dusk with children up past good-night-time.
I thought you should know
that your sincerity was striking, too,
like lightning shards in midnight thunderstorms,
electric and compelling, calling you
to dance out in the rain, forget the norms.
I thought you should know
I didn't think you knew me all that well
but when I saw my shirt stained red from where
my heart leaped through I knew that I could tell
you anything and you would somehow care.
I thought you should know
before, I saw you as some other friend,
but now I know you from the words you penned.
I thought you should know.
