Red to Black
My hands trembled as I gingerly unwrapped the thin parcel. I stared at the folded black belt with my name printed clearly in gold lettering. Dazed, my eyes drifted from the neat black belt in my hands to the frayed red belt around my waist. It took several silent moments before I was able to reconcile the belt with all the work I had put into not only the past four hours, not only the past few months, but the past five years. Ultimately, with a burst of absolute joy, reality set in. I had passed my black belt test.
