We thought they were beneath us
We knew we could control them
We said that they were less than human
Because there were not white

We said that they were savage
We knew that they would fight us
We thought that we could break them
Because they were not white


We said that they were lesser
We knew that they were weaker
We thought we would defeat them
Because they were not men

We say that they deserve it
We know what they did to us
We think that they are lesser
Because they are not black

The author's comments:
This is a poem about the continuing cycle of discrimination that has and is taking place in America. We are constantly discriminating whether it is sex, age, race, or color. Sometimes we are not aware that we are discriminating. I think that Americans should become much more aware of it and try to stop it. Discrimination is nothing but hate.

I like this, it's a very clever statement and format. It shows the bigotry of both white men, AND black men. The only thing wrong with it is it's not really a sonnet. (A sonnet is 14 lines, and in your poem I counted 16) I still love it though.
